St. Pete’s Turf Rules Changed in 2026
St. Petersburg’s code has required yards to be kept as permeable, landscaped green space, and in 2023 city staff reported 12 code citations over two years for artificial turf installs, eight of them involving turf in the public right-of-way as well as the yard. Since May 19, 2026, Florida Rule 62-308.100, adopted under section 125.572 of the Florida Statutes, bars counties and cities from prohibiting synthetic turf on single-family lots of one acre or less when the install meets the state standards. The right-of-way, the strip between the sidewalk and the street, is city property, so ask the city before changing the surface there.
Drainage is the other St. Pete question. The city saw more than six feet of storm surge during Hurricane Helene in September 2024. On low lots, the ground under the turf is graded so water runs away from the house, and rain passes through the turf backing into a compacted stone base. We look at how water moves across your yard at the estimate.
How the install goes
6 Steps to a Turf Yard in St. Pete
A turf install in St. Petersburg follows the same steps as every project on our artificial turf installation page, starting with the base.
Measure the yard for a free estimate
We look at the size of the area, how water moves across it, access for equipment, and any sprinklers in the way.
Remove the existing grass
Sod and the soil under it come out so the finished turf can sit level with pavers, edging, and doorways.
Set the grade and handle irrigation
The ground is shaped so water runs away from the house, and sprinkler heads inside the turf area are dealt with.
Build and compact the base
A base of crushed stone goes in and is compacted into a firm, level surface that drains.
Lay and secure the turf
Turf is cut to the yard, seamed, and fastened along the edges so it stays flat.
Infill and brush
Infill is spread into the turf and the fibers are brushed up so the lawn looks and feels finished.
Pricing
What Turf Costs in St. Pete
Every turf project is priced for the specific project. These are the things that move the number:
- Square footage of the area
- The turf you choose
- Base work: how much grass and soil come out, and whether the yard needs regrading or drainage
- Access: fenced side yards, pool cages, and slopes add handling time
- Edges and cut-ins around pavers, trees, and curved borders

On a single-family lot of one acre or less, yes, when the install meets Florida’s synthetic turf standards. Since May 19, 2026, Rule 62-308.100 bars cities, including St. Petersburg, from prohibiting compliant turf on those lots. HOA covenants still apply.
That strip is the city right-of-way, which is public property, and it figured in most of the turf citations St. Petersburg issued before 2026. Ask the city before changing the surface there. Turf on your own lot is covered by the state rule.
Rain passes through the turf backing into a compacted stone base, and the ground is graded so water runs away from the house. Lots that hold water need that grading most, so we look at how water moves across the yard at the estimate.
